iRacing 2023 Season 3: What's new?

iRacing released their usual season update this week with several new pieces of content. Sadly, the long-awaited rain feature didn't arrive, but we're expecting it in 12 weeks' time.

New cars

With this update, we received three new cars, with all three being road racers that will neatly slot into three endurance racing categories.

Cadillac V-Series.R GTP

Cadillac V-Series.R GTP

The Cadillac V-Series.R GTP is a prototype racer built to the LMDh specifications. It's a hybrid-powered vehicle that uses a huge V8 engine that's supplemented by a 50kW electric motor that gives the car prodigious performance. The Dallara-built chassis looks stunning and produces a huge amount of downforce, making it the fastest prototype on iRacing alongside the BMW M Hybrid V8.

Ligier JS P320

Ligier JS P320 LMP3

The JS P320 from Ligier will be the third category of prototype in endurance racing on iRacing. The car is quite light at 955kg and is powered by a 455hp V8 engine and is aimed at drivers that are making the step up to prototype racing. It's, of course, slower overall that an LMP2 and an LMDh but it provides all of the necessary characteristics and vehicle dynamics to learn the skills required to race prototypes successfully.

Porsche 911 GT3 R (992)

Porsche 911 GT3 R (992)

Powered by a 416kW flat-six engine, the Porsche 911 GT3 R is the latest in a long line of 911s that have the classic rear-mounted engine powering the wheels configuration. Being a 911, we're sure that this car will be very popular on iRacing and fills up the already big list of GT3 cars quite nicely.

New Tracks

iRacing introduced two new tracks to the service this week. MotorLand Aragón with 7 configurations and Willow Springs International Raceway arrive as brand new tracks. The Chicago Street Course has been updated to include the new 2023 Cup config.

MotorLand Aragón

Aragón is the track we're most excited about. Its claim to fame is mainly due to it hosting MotoGP, but we're sure it will prove to be popular with cars on iRacing as well.

Final thoughts

We only had a chance so far to test the new Cadillac LMDh, and we already love it. It sounds incredible, and the handling feels better than the BMW LMDh. It's early days, but stay tuned for an upcoming article on "Everything you need to know about the Cadillac V-Series.R GTP" where we'll discuss in detail all of the finer points of the car.

iRacing also added a new foliage system to improve trackside greenery, improvements in the Spotter System and faster loading times. We're of course not happy that the highly anticipated rain feature didn't make the trip but it was to be expected. Needless to say, Season 4 should be a fantastic update that we're really looking forward to.
